Apple’s $4.7B Green Bonds Investment – Supporting Breakthrough Technologies for Reducing Carbon Footprints

  • Apple has issued a $4.7 billion Green Bond since 2016
  • 2019 Green Bond will fund 50 initiatives, including development of breakthrough low-carbon aluminum project
  • Apple has partnered with Elysis for using ELYSIS aluminum for producing new iPhone SE
  • Apple is striving toward using exclusively recyclable and renewable materials throughout all products

Apple has issued a $4.7 billion bond since 2016 to help the firm in meeting its objective of becoming carbon neutral across its entire supply chain by 2030. Its first two bonds were issued in 2016 and 2017 respectively and have been completely subscribed. The 2019 Green Bond will fund 50 initiatives, including development of breakthrough low-carbon aluminium project. These 50 projects will reduce as well as offset 2,883,000 metric tonnes of CO2e, will help in installing 700 megawatts of renewable energy capacity around the globe, and will promote recycling research and development.

Headquartered in Montréal, Elysis is a Canadian company established as a joint venture between Alcoa and Rio Tinto. It is working on disruptive technologies related to aluminum smelting industry.  Apple has partnered with Elysis for using ELYSIS aluminum for producing new iPhone SE. Elysis has developed breakthrough technology which successfully eliminates emission of greenhouse gas (GHG) from the aluminum smelting process. Globally this is first of its kind technology which emits oxygen as a by-product during smelting process. ELYSIS technology will be reckoned as a start of a new era for the aluminum industry, globally.

Apple is decreasing emissions by purchasing carbon-free aluminium. Aluminum from Elysis is the first of its kind metal to be produced on a large scale outside of a laboratory without emitting any carbon dioxide during the smelting process.

Its Clean energy projects have received more than $500 million of the company’s 2019 Green Bond funds. The company’s data centre in Viborg, Denmark, is powered by the world’s largest onshore wind turbines, with all extra energy fed back into the Danish grid.

To save the earth’s scarce resources, Apple is striving toward using exclusively recyclable and renewable materials throughout all products. Apple’s investments are helping to advance the breakthrough technologies that are needed to cut carbon emissions.Staff Galactik Views
