Quad – Partners Agree for Strategic Co-operation in Areas of Security, Climate Change and Emerging Tech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and US President Joe Biden renewed their steadfast commitment towards a free and open Indo-Pacific that is both inclusive and resilient in Tokyo.

Quad is a positive force dedicated to bringing practical advantages to the region and to upholding the ideals of freedom, rule of law, democratic values, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Quad is dedicated to the peaceful resolution of problems without the use of force or threats. Quad believes that any status quo should not be altered unilaterally, and that international rule of law, including freedom of navigation and overflight, must be followed. This is critical for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Quad members will continue to act boldly together in the area and beyond to advance the common principles. Quad members reiterated their commitment to sustaining international rules-based order in a joint statement. Countries are free from all means of coercion, including military, economic, and political, under the international rule-based system. In the Joint Statement Quad Members have:

  • Reiterated steadfast commitment for ASEAN unity
    • Applaud the EU’s Joint Communication on the EU Strategy for Indo-Pacific Cooperation, which was released in September 2021, and increasing European participation in the Indo-Pacific area
    • In the East and South China Seas, adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as well as freedom of navigation and overflight.
    • Increasing collaboration with Pacific Island nations
  • Complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, as well as condemnation of North Korea’s destabilising missile development and testing, including several intercontinental ballistic missile tests
    •  Support for ASEAN-led efforts in Myanmar to find a solution
    • Quad members Condemned Terrorist Attacks on India in Mumbai i.e., 26/11 & and Pathankot terrorist acts
    • Afghan land must never be used to threaten or attack another country, or to harbour or train terrorists again.
    • Afghan territory not to be used for sheltering and training terrorists or attacking other country
    • Co-operation in the area of climate change, cyber security, critical and emerging technology, space co-operation
