Iridium’s partnership with Qualcomm Technologies aims to integrate satellite services into a wide range of smartphone brands, with the potential to expand to other consumer devices in the future.

Qualcomm Technologies and Iridium Communications have collaborated to enable  satellite messaging and emergency services in smartphones powered by Snapdragon® Mobile Platforms.

The fully operational Iridium® satellite constellation supports Qualcomm Technologies’ new Snapdragon® Satellite solution. Emergency messaging via Snapdragon Satellite is expected to debut in premium Android smartphones launched in select regions beginning in the second half of 2023.

Rather than focusing on a single smartphone manufacturer, Iridium’s partnership with Qualcomm Technologies aims to integrate satellite services into a wide range of smartphone brands, with the potential to expand to other consumer devices in the future.

Iridium® satellite connections can enable similar applications for vehicles, as well as other personal consumer and IoT devices, in addition to smartphones.

Partnership will allows Iridium to serve the smartphone industry horizontally – and provides future opportunity for serving consumer and vehicular applications.

With roughly 85% of the world’s surface lacking cellular coverage, Snapdragon Satellite-equipped smartphones will be able to access global coverage, send emergency messages, and text with friends and family from anywhere on the planet with a clear view of the sky.
