United States and Chile Discusses Key Defense Priorities

Mr. Daniel P. Erikson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Western Hemisphere Affairs, co-chaired the 20th meeting of the US-Chile Defense Consultative Committee (DCC) on September 13 along with the Chilean co-chair, Under Secretary of Defense Gabriel Gaspar. The meeting took place in Santiago, Chile, at the Chilean Ministry of Defense.

The DCC, which was established in 1996, is the primary strategic forum for bilateral defence cooperation between the United States and Chile. The Forum brings key leaders together to discuss bilateral defence issues as well as overall defence priorities.

The co-chairs brought together policymakers from the United States Department of Defense and Chile’s Ministry of Defense to talk about global and regional security, Women, Peace, and Security, cyber, space, and science and technology.

Mr Erikson, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, and Under Secretary Gaspar approved the formation of a new bilateral subcommittee focused on Women, Peace, and Security.  Next round of the DCC will be held in 2024 and will be hosted by US

The co-chairs also reaffirmed the importance of the US-Chile defence relationship and developed a comprehensive workplan to deepen collaboration on areas of mutual defence and security interest, based on a shared respect for democracy and human rights.
