“We are at the Dawn of AI Age that will Shape the Course of Humanity”: Prime Minister Modi at AI Action Summit, Paris

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the AI Action Summit in Paris, co-chaired with French President Emmanuel Macron. PM Modi highlighted AI’s transformative potential, emphasizing its impact on economy, security, and society. He described AI as “writing the code for humanity in this century,” underscoring its significance in shaping the future.

PM Modi stressed the importance of collective global efforts to establish governance and standards for AI. This would ensure that AI development aligns with shared values, addresses risks, and builds trust. He advocated for an AI that is inclusive, transparent, and ethical. AI is developing at unprecedented scale and speed. Modi pointed out concerns like job displacement due to AI but reassured that history shows technology changes the nature of work rather than eliminating it, calling for investment in skilling and re-skilling.

There was a strong emphasis on ensuring AI benefits are accessible to all, particularly in the Global South where capabilities like power, talent, and data might be lacking. Modi suggested pulling together resources and talent to democratize AI technology. Modi called for the development of open-source systems to enhance trust and transparency in AI and advocated for building quality data centers free from biases.

PM Modi highlighted India’s achievements in building digital public infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people at a low cost, indicating India’s readiness to contribute to global AI governance and innovation. He also spoke about India’s initiative to develop its own large language model, showcasing India’s commitment to AI innovation tailored to its diverse needs.


PM Modi’s address, highlights his vision for AI not just as a technological frontier but as a tool for global good, necessitating cooperative, ethical, and inclusive governance structures.

The AI Action Summit in Paris is a prominent dialogue platform where leaders from various countries are discussing the implications, governance, and future of artificial intelligence. Participants included heads of state, tech industry leaders, AI researchers, policy makers, and representatives from international organizations. AI’s potential to drive economic growth through new industries, job creation, and efficiency is huge. However, there is also concern to manage the displacement of jobs through reskilling and education initiatives. Focus is also on establishing frameworks for AI governance that would ensure ethical, transparent, and inclusive AI development.

Amongst the World leaders, European Union’s President Ursula von der Leyen has also announced EU initiative to invest €200 billion in AI through the Invest AI program. This investment strategy is part of Europe’s effort to become a global leader in AI, focusing on public-private partnerships to develop trustworthy AI, aiming to compete with the US and China.
