Russian forces took control of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant on Friday, following fighting with Ukrainian troops. News has sent a shock wave across the world on the impending fears of nuclear disaster. Since Russia’s troops entered Ukraine last week and began bombing cities with shells and missiles, the country’s nuclear facilities have been a major source of concern.

According to RIA News, Ukrainian Atomic Energy Ministry has confirmed that one of the units of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant which is Europe’s largest of its sort has been hit during a Russian troop strike. Further statement in the Face Book page of Ukrainian State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation confirms that Russian Federation’s military troops have seized the Zaporizhzhia NPP site.

Ukraine has 15 operational nuclear reactors, which generate about half of the country’s electricity. Zaporizhzhia is  largest in Europe with six reactors and a capacity of over 6 gigawatts.

Moscow has been accused by Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, of using “nuclear terror” by risking repeat of the Chernobyl disaster, and have pleaded Global Community to support Kyiv. French President Emmanuel Macron had a chat with Putin. Following the chat Mcacron has stated that he worries the “worst is yet to come.” He shared that Putin intends to destabilize the Kyiv Government.

After Russia captured Europe’s largest nuclear power facility, the West expressed its displeasure.

Global commodity prices are rising and Markets are tumbling on the fear of nuclear escalation. European Markets were down over 3%. FTSE, CAC and Dax Traded in red. Asian markets have also tumbled following fear and uncertainty. The China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has announced that it will cease doing business with Russia and Belarus, citing the bank’s best interests. Intel and Airbnb declared that their operations in Russia and Belarus would be halted, joining a growing number of US tech companies freezing operations in Moscow.

We must keep in mind that, in order for mankind to avert an existential catastrophe, national leaders must work together to reduce the likelihood of existential threats posed by leaders who have the power to press the nuke button at their will and are not accountable to anybody. Worst if a military strike inadvertently hits a nuclear installation but, in this case, strike is pre meditated and planned. We are standing at the door step of Nuclear War.  Problem in Ukraine is becoming a collective challenge for humanity. It’s a question of future of our civilization.
