US & Western Allies Votes to Censure Iran – In Response Tehran Blocks IAEA Monitoring Cameras

  • International Atomic Energy Agency adopted a resolution denouncing Tehran’s lack of cooperation, with the Agency.
  • Russia and China voted against the Resolution
  • Iran says that its response to the resolution will be firm and proportionate

After the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution denouncing Tehran’s lack of cooperation, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America emphasized that Iran must comply with its legal duties and work with the Agency.

The four countries’ foreign ministries issued a joint statement on Wednesday welcoming the IAEA’s move, which came “in response to Iran’s lack of sufficient cooperation” with it on “serious and pending safeguards” relating to its nuclear activities.

According to The Islamic Republic News Agency, the official news agency of Iran, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh has said that Tehran’s regards the resolution adopted by IAEA as anti-Tehran and its response to the resolution will be firm and proportionate. According to IRNA Iran considers the resolution not only wrong but also politically motivated as well as unconstructive in nature.

India, Libya, and Pakistan abstained from voting. Russia and China voted against the measure.

Iranian Foreign Ministry has criticized the move and said that it will be counterproductive and weaken Iran’s cooperation with the agency.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has slammed the International Atomic Energy Organization’s Board of Governors’ anti-Iran resolution, claiming that it will achieve nothing but diminish Iran’s collaboration with the agency.

In 2019, the  Agency uncovered a number of queries pertaining to possible undeclared nuclear material and nuclear-related activities in Iran that had not been notified to the Agency and asked Iran to respond. The Director General submitted the Agency’s findings of four locations in Iran that had not been notified to the Agency, named Locations 1, 2, 3, and 4, and Iran’s explanations for these locations in a report to the Board of Governors in March 2021. In 2020 and 2021, technical conversations between the Agency and Iran produced no results.

It’s been two years since the IAEA board passed a resolution condemning Iran’s lack of cooperation. IAEA believes that nuclear material is present at undeclared sites in Iran and Agency is unaware of its location. To avoid jeopardizing the Vienna nuclear talks, the Biden administration has thus far refrained from taking such a step.

In countermeasure, Iran has turned off two UN nuclear watchdog surveillance cameras that were monitoring one of its nuclear sites, state television said on Wednesday.
